Drawing leaves the surface and becomes a spray gesture performed in space.
I created the concept and physical interaction prototype during my 2011 internship with the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT Media Lab.

The problem
Most digital drawing systems assume a surface. SPrAyCE explores a different possibility: drawing directly in space through a physical gesture that feels closer to spraying than to clicking or touching.
Design & implementation
The project treats spray-like movement as an input metaphor for spatial drawing. Instead of working on a screen or sheet, the user performs a gesture in the air and the system turns that action into a drawing interaction.
The linked research paper and demonstration document the prototype and its interaction approach.
What it does
- Mid-air drawing interaction
- Spray gesture used as the core input metaphor
- Research-oriented HCI prototype
- Strong embodied interaction angle
Why I built it
SPrAyCE matters because it explores how digital creation can become more physical and expressive. It is a good example of interaction work driven by gesture, metaphor, and spatial presence.
